The Brighton & Hove Local Employment Scheme brings together employers and local people who are looking for work or training in the construction industry.
The Local Employment Scheme Co-ordinator works with the construction companies leading on new major developments, to ensure that they meet their commitments to the local community.
So if you do want to work in construction, or possibly train for a particular trade or skill, you need to be job ready. That means having suitable ID, a valid CSCS card and references, if you have them.
Contractors are willing to take people on but they need commitment from anyone working on their sites.
Major Construction Projects in progress or commencing in 2016
2016 will be an exceptional year for construction if all the projects in the pipline go to plan. The city hasn't seen the recent level of construction activity in decades, with projects big and small, becoming a reality.
These projects will provide a range of opportunities for those who genuinely want to work in construction and progress on a career path through training.
Contractors have had to commit to providing these opportunities and the Local Employment Scheme Co-ordinator works with them to ensure that they are actually delivering on those commitments.
Phase 1 of Brighton Marina development, Brighton Indigo Hotel at Brighton Station, the i360 and refurbishment of Hove Town Hall will be completed by late summer of 2016.
The council's New Homes for Neighbourhoods programme is well and truly under way. A variety of new homes are being built at various locations across the city including the redevelopment of the former Whitehawk Library site which will provide 57 new homes.
The contractor delivering the housing programme is Westridge Construction, who are keen to provide opportunities to local people, so keep a look out for the posters on the sites.
The redevelopment of the Royal Sussex County Hospital will take a minimum of 9 years.
The main contractor, Laing O'Rourke Construction, has committed to providing 50 apprenticeship starts in the first 5 years and a range of courses delivered in local communities that will help people to progress into employment from entry level.
There will also be opportunities for graduates to start their professional careers with the company.
The contractor, Midgard, is on schedule to complete the first phase of the development at Brighton Marina by the summer of 2016. The workforce has included a good percentage of local people who have had a range of employment opportunities. Several City College trainees are completing their trade apprenticeships on the development.
Phase 2 is indicated to commence mid 2017 which will provide further employment and training opportunities for local people.
The redevelopment of the former municipal market in Circus Street is finally underway, with demolition of the market virutally complete. This development will be a mix of residental, student accommodation, University of Brighton teaching facilities and a library. South East Dance will also be establishing a studio for teaching dance and to showcase dance productions.
The two main contractors are Osborne and Kier and both have committed to providing a combined minimum of 19 apprenticeships as well as work experience for college students and those seeking to enter the industry.
